dc.description.abstract | Quality of products and services •is assuming greater importance in Global Market scenario. There ,is an increasing realization that quality brings in customers satisfaction and at the same time, result in overall saving in cost. In order to attain, required level of quality in any organization, it is necessary that quality management system be structured. Comprehensive and properly implemented quality management system are the best means to ensure that its products and services will consistently meet customers expectations. ISO 9000 series of quality system standards are the most widely accepted model for such a quality management system. With the publication of recent revisions in ISO 9000 quality system, the industry has to prepare a documented system in line with the latest changes and their implementation. Materials management is one of the important division in any organization, where system Approach can be used effectively for disciplining the diversified fields of management. Materials management deals with the integrated function of various sections dealing with planning and control of materials, purchasing, Vendor development and inspection of products. In most industries, the cost of materials ranges between 40-80% of the total _ cost of production. Thus effective management of the materials help in cutting the cost involved significantly. Materials management forms core of any industry. It forms a bridge between the input materials and the final product. Materials management function has a vital role to play in an automobile industry. Thus implementing ISO 9000 for the activities of materials management in an automobile industry would result in providing a system approach to Materials management functions. iv I have done this thesis work at Maruti Udyog Limited. Maruti Udyog Limited is a Company engaged in production of automobiles in collaboration with M/s Suzuki Motors corporation, Japan. For their new product Zen to be exported to European market and to with stand external competitive threats, the company is trying for ISO 9002 certification. I have studied their . quality system. The expansion of their plant, resulting in change in organization structure and the publication of revised ISO 9000 - standards made the task more interesting. I worked with department manager, quality assurance and identified the procedures to be developed. I have developed 10 quality assurance procedures and drafted 5 work instruction as per ISO 9002-94 standards for the activities of materials management. These procedures were successfully implemented. For periodic checking of the system, internal quality audit check sheets were prepared for six departments. Finally I have discussed some of the improvements that were achieved. u | en_US |
