The phenomenon of chip breaking has not been fully understood'• till now. Although much of the knowledge has been obtained laboriously during the last few decades, there still exist an inability to integrate the knowledge into a general model. This paper reviews comprehensively the present knowledge of the fundamentals of chip breaking. It deals with the various factors affecting chip breaking and its interrelationship with other factors like chip curling radius, chip reduction coefficient etc. Design method of two common types of chip breaker and some unconventional methods of chip breaking like kinematic chip breaking and hydraulic chip breaking are also dealt with. The design method of a new type of chip breaker has also been proposed together with a mathematical equation for calculating curling radius of the chip with the help of cutting parameters.en_US
