Abstract: Due to the advantages that the packetized voice transmission provide over other forms of voice transmission, considerable research has been carried out to understand the queueing behaviour of packet voice communication system. Different models have been proposed which take into account the correlated nature of voice packet arrival process. A review of these models is presented. The potential efficacy of Poisson model with the use of smoothing technique is also investigated. ATM network has evolved to support wide range of services offered by BISDN. The performance of a voice packet multiplexer with cell discarding for ATM is examined. The results that with cell discarding, very small cell delays can be achieved with graceful degradation in voice quality. Moreover, use of cell discarding increases the number voice sources that can be multiplexed together.
