Prediction of the elevation in the ambient noise level in the surrounding community on accout of the installation of any industrial unit forms an essential component of its environmnetal impact assessment necessary for the clearance of any industrial project. The paper briefly reviefI reviews the damaging effect of noise on the humans. This dissertation describes the radiation pattern of the noise sources, the factors affecting the propagation of noise over large distances and the anomalies arising out of wind and temperature gradients. It also accounts for the sheilding effect of barriers and buildings. Finally it attempts to describe modelling of the surrounding noise environment using a more refined computerised model for such predictionsen_US
