Authors: Tandon, Rashmi
Keywords: ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING;COMPUTER NETWORK;NEDIS;DISTRIBUTED SYSTEM
Issue Date: 1991
Abstract: A distributed operating system is one that looks to its users like an ordinary centralized operating system but runs on multiple, independent computers. A •distributed system is a special case of a network, one having a high degree of transparency. The main goal of a distributed processing system is to provide a wider range of resources for users to utilize in doing their tasks. The goal of the distributed operating system is to provide the mechanisms under which these expanded resources are avail-able without the user being aware of the distribution. A distributed system, named NEDIS, has been imple-mented on two HP 9000s which are connected through a thin LAN.
