Abstract: The design of speech coders that produce high quality speech at 6 to 16 Kb/sec has been an area of research of considerable interest during the past several years. Differential encoding structures have provided some of the most successful approaches for achieving the desired objective. In this. dissertation, Differential Pulse Code Modulation (DPCM) system is presented as a practical encoding scheme for speech signals. The 8086 microprocessor has been used to give the system flexibility and 'fast operation. The system's complexity has been reduced by making use of a second order predictor and rectangular window function. This also goes to improve its speed without losing too much quality of the signal. In the end of the report, various modifications are pointed out which can make the present system more varsatile system for speech coding. These modifications include use of third order predictor and Adaptive algorithm for quantizer and predictor which can be incorporated in the present system because of the sufficient capability of 16-bit microprocessor.
