Title: IMPLEMENTATION OF A FUNCTIONAL SHELL ON UNIX
Authors: Dave, Mayank
Keywords: ELECTRONICS AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING;FUNCTIONAL SHELL;UNIX;PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE
Issue Date: 1991
Abstract: A major feature of UNIX shell is that it provides a framework which can be used to build complex programs by combining existing simple programs. Such a combination of commands is similar to composition in functional languages. Functional languages allow parallel evaluation in a natural manner and lack the notion of assignment. Functional languages are the probable candidates for future generation computers based on parallel processing. Many of the advantages that functional programming languages hold over imperative languages are incorporated in the functional shell. The functional shell has been implemented in C under UNIX operating system.
