Issue Date: 1994
Abstract: The present work aims at simulation of solidification of simple shaped steel castings in sand mold. A model for the solidification pattern has been first formulated in terms of heat transfer partial differential equation for two dimensions with initial and boundary conditions, with some realistic assumptions. The implicit altertnating direction (IAD) finite difference method has been used for solution of model. Computer Language " C " has been used for writting programme. The simulation results have been presented in the form of dynamic solidification patterns, temperatures at different grid nodes, time-temperature-distance curves, location of hot spot and probable locations of shrinkage prone zones. Computer simulation of solidification of castings of "L" shaped cross sections and rectangular cross-sections has been considered. The simulation results were compared with the results presented by Dr. R.D. Pehlke and Dr. F.A. Brandt the pioneers in the field of solidification of castings , for rectangular and "L" shaped cross-sections respectively. They are in very good agreement with the results of Pehlke and Brandt
