dc.description.abstractDigital transmission is a dominant means of communication for voice and data. It is expected to provide flexibility, reliability and cost effectiveness, with the added potential for communication privacy and security through encryption. Digital storage also means the convenience of transmitting speech as a digital data file over any data network. From a transmission viewpoint, digital speech data transmission is relatively insensitive to noise, crosstalk and distortion. The costs of digital storage and transmission media are generally proportional to the amount of digital data that can be stored or transmitted. While the cost of such media decreases every year, the demand for their use increases at even higher rate. Therefore, there is a continuing need to minimize the number of bits necessary to transmit signals while maintaining an acceptable signal fidelity or quality. Vector quantization is a process of redundancy removal that is used effectively, for a variety of signals for efficient coding.en_US
