Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) is a major interface between computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM) leading to Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). In the present work, a Generative Process Planning System has been developed on the MICROVAX microcomputer to prepare process plans for turned components. A coding scheme has been developed to identify various geometrical features with technological specifications. This system is capable of selecting: - the processes for different geometr ical features depending upon the technological requirements of the features. - the type of the cutting tool. - the feed, depth of cut and cutting speed for different tool materials (at present H.S.S. and Carbide tool materials have been incorp.orated). - the machine tool depending upon the cutting force. - the possible process sequences using relationship matrix. The present system generates process plans for turned components containing upto 9 geometrical features. The generated process plans are evaluated -- +kn k,cir ..l 4-n+n1 m,rIninirnr. +irnn ,n.-I +hn vi iimknv. n-9 (•v) tool setup changes. The author has used GKS software to obtain graphic representation of the successive blank shapes after each operation, as it is transformed from the initial blank to the final product through the selected operation sequence. The functioning of the software has been ascertained by generating and plotting the process planning sheets for . sample components. Recommendations for future work have also beenen_US
