Abstract: To analyse the coupling between hundreds or thousands of modes in a multimode fiber coupler is not an easy matter. Since a multimode fiber coupler is a useful component in a number of optical communication systems, an attempt is made to analyse the coupling phenomenon and thereby design an optical multimode coupler using computer programs. Chapter 1 of the dissertation gives a general introduction to the various types of multimode couplers. Chapter 2 gives an insight into the coupling theory between two fibers very close to each other. Chapter 3 deals with leakage phenomenon in optical fibers. Chapter 4 deals with analysis of the coupling process. In Chapter 5 we prove the validity of the simplified theory for a multimode coupler. In Chapter 6 a design procedure for making a multimode fiber coupler using computer program is presented. The computer programs can be used to study the coupling phenomenon also.'
