Abstract: The traditional procedure of cam profile design for automatic lathes is tedious and time consuming. The advent of computers followed by the developments in computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing should now make the cam design procedure faster and economical. Published work pertaining to computer aided design of cams has mostly been concerned with only profile design of cams in a very general form without designing the cam layout data. In the present work, a comprehensive analysis of the existing procedure of tooling layout of single spindle automatic lathe and cam profile design has been carried out and a computer aided methodology has been presented for design of cam layout data and cam profiles for single spindle automatic lathe using TRAUB(A-25) as the basis. The software has been developed in two separate parts. The first part caters for design of cam layout data which is the input to the second part of the software for cam profile design and plotting. The software is efficient and requires a maximum CPU time of 3 seconds. The functioning of the software has been ascertained by designing and plotting the cams for 5 sample components. Recommendations for the future work have also been made on the basis of analysis carried out in the present work.
