dc.description.abstractDue to certain disadvantages in conventional tool life criteria such as flank wear width and crater wear depth recently machining ratio has been proposed as a criterion for tool life assessment. Mcchining ratio is defind as the ratio of volume of material removed to the volume of tool wear. It is a dimensionless quan-tity and simple to use. It is based on combined wear of flank and crater, chip notching and primary and secondary grooving. Some investigations have been reported in this direction for uncoated carbide tools. Coated carbide tools are recent development. So in this work the machining ratio criterion for tool life assessment has been applied to these tools. The investi-gations on the effect of various cutting parameters (cutting speed feed and depth of cut) on machining ratio has been made and comparision has been made with the conventional flank wear width criterion. Further, the suitability of machining ratio as a tool life criterion for coated carbide tools has been discussed. The investigations reveal that the machining ratio is suitable criterion for tool life measurement also in case of coated carbide tools.en_US
