The present work deals with the influence of polarity on the melting rate in the submerged arc welding. The influence of various welding parameters such as welding current, arc voltage, welding speed, and electrode extension on the difference of melting rate with the two polarities have been studied at the same: time. The influence of these parameters on bead geometry has been evaluated. It has been obs~rvcd that melting rate is larger with DCEN as compared to DCEP. The difference in melting rate increases with increasing current, whereas arc voltage, welding speed and electrode extension show little or insigni- ficant effect on the difference of melting rate with the polarities. There is a piling up of metal results irregular bead shape in case of DCEN along with lower penetration. The variation in bead characteristics with welding parameters are in conformity with the results produced by earlier investigatorsen_US
