In this dissertation, using the finite element method the two--dimensional analysis of fluid-structure interaction problems has been presented. The effects of parameters such as, depth of submerge, height of submerge, interaction among the oscillating bodies on the added mass coefficients have been studied.. For the sake of clarity, the entire study has been put under the headings, INTRODUCTION AND THE REVIEW OF TiE PAST WORK (Chapter-1), ANALYSIS (Ch pt@r-2) and RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS (Chapter-"3). Chapter--1 gives the introduction of the problem, review of the past work and the problem taken up for the dissertation (present work). Chapter--2 gives the formulation part. The basic equation for the fluid-structure interaction problem has been derived using the Navier Stoke's equations and the Continuity equation. Galorkin's method has been used to develope the finite element formulation. A computer programme has been developed based on this formulation. The same has been given in Appendix-4. Chap tar-3 presents the results and discussions. Comparison of the results for pressure and, added mass coefficients have been made with some of the existing closed form solutions. The results for different cases have beers discussed and conclusions drawn. Three approaches for deriving the momentum equation for inviscid fluid (μ=0) are presented in Appendix-1. The results for added mass coefficients for submerged horizontal plate obtained for a _few different cases are given in Appendix-2. Appendix--3 gives a list of formulas to calculate added mass for a few oasesen_US
