dc.description.abstractElastic contact between rigid plane and a half-space whose surface height is described by the sure of two cosine waves has been considered in this study. The two cosine waves represent the two scales of suiface height, i.e., surface waviness (the low frequency component) and surface roughness (the high frequency component). The surface normal displacements and contact pressures are found by a numerical technique that exploits the structure of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and an exact result in linear elasticity. The method also involves a variational principle which guarantees the uniqueness of the solution of the contact problem and significantly reduces the computation time. The FFT has been used to convert the , contact problem to frequency domain in which the relationship between contact pressure and displacement is found to be quite simple. This approach has been used to study the effect of variation of the amplitudes of waviness and roughness on the load-displacement characteristics, real area of contact and wear volumeen_US
