IDENTITY FORMATION AND RESISTANCE: A STUDY OF BILDUNGSROMAN TROPE IN THE SELECT INDIAN SCIENCE FICTION

Title: IDENTITY FORMATION AND RESISTANCE: A STUDY OF BILDUNGSROMAN TROPE IN THE SELECT INDIAN SCIENCE FICTION
Authors: Jain, Shreyansh
Abstract: Bildungsroman is a literary genre focused on the development of individual identity,
particularly emphasising the moral and psychological growth of the protagonist within a
narrative framework. In recent decades, there has been an increase in young adult science
fiction narratives that not only incorporate the bildungsroman trope of identity formation but
also offer critiques of political autocracy, dictatorship, surveillance, and colonialism. These
narratives delve into the complexities of self and identity by placing characters in environments
characterised by oppressive control, thereby highlighting the importance and potential of
adolescence in the process of identity formation. While considerable academic research has
addressed the theme of identity in Western young adult science fiction, Indian science fiction
remains largely overlooked in this regard, representing a notable gap in the field. Furthermore,
there is a lack of comprehensive academic inquiry at the intersection of bildungsroman and
Indian science fiction, which this study aims to address. The thesis conducts a structural and
textual analysis of the Indian science fiction narratives, concentrating on the motif of identity
formation. The narratives under consideration include Clone (2018) by Priya Sarukkai Chabria,
Escape (2008) and The Island of Lost Girls (2015) by Manjula Padmanabhan, and Meru (2023)
by S. B. Divya. The thesis encompasses a wide variety of perspectives in its different chapters,
capturing the essence of bildungsroman in varied forms and contextual backgrounds in science
fiction. Each main chapter is chiefly dedicated to an individual author’s texts, scrutinising a
particular thematic aspect of the bildung process.

RELATION BETWEEN THE MINIMUM SUPPORT PRICE AND DOUBLING FARMER’S INCOMES

Title: RELATION BETWEEN THE MINIMUM SUPPORT PRICE AND DOUBLING FARMER’S INCOMES
Authors: Kaushik, Harsh Vardhan
Abstract: Let us consider this analysis to be based on the fact that MSP is more than 60% of the cost of production. Let us also consider that there are enough procurement agencies, so that the farmers will not lose out due to a lack of agencies in these areas which are rural. These are much more loose assumptions as compared to the reality on the ground. The question that we would try to answer here is whether an increase in MSP and terms of trade in agriculture leads to betterment of farmers in terms of income and well-being.
If we were to give the answer in one word, the answer would be no. Farmers in India are not a single unit. According to the National Sample Survey Office data, a huge number of farmers (92%) in India are marginal farmers who cultivate less than 2 hectares (5 acres) of land in 2010–11. Thus, there are a very small number of farmers with large holdings. Given this, there would only be a very small fraction of households who would be net buyer of agricultural commodities and a very few of them would be net sellers. This thus creates an imbalance which works in the favor of the large farmers and any increase in MSP would thus go into further enriching the farmers with larger landholdings.
Rawal (2016) has argued, on studying various villages in many parts of India, that top five households in a village derive the most substantial income from crop produce. According to the Agricultural Statistics at a Glance, Ministry of Agriculture , the sale of power tillers increased three times from Rs 17,000 in 2004–05 to Rs 49,000 in 2015–16; for tractors the figures were Rs 2,48,000 and Rs 5,71,000.
These figures indicate the ability of the large farmers to invest their surplus in further enhancing the productivity of their farms thus showing their ability to invest in times which were generally considered to be times of agrarian distress.

WORKPLACE SPIRITUALITY AS A PREDICTOR OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AND STRESS RESILIENCY

Title: WORKPLACE SPIRITUALITY AS A PREDICTOR OF PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AND STRESS RESILIENCY
Authors: Sharma, Santosh Kumar
Abstract: In a pragmatic response to synchronic psychological, social, and organizational realities
workplace spirituality, psychological well-being, and stress resiliency are some of the key
issues which have received prominent attention by corporate and academia. The available
corpus on workplace spirituality strongly argues that workplace spirituality plays a vital
role in promoting psychological well-being and stress resiliency of employees. However, a
clear empirical substantiation has been lacking in this direction. Therefore, the present
study is an endeavor to fill this lacuna by exploring the relationship between workplace
spirituality, psychological well-being, and stress resiliency in a sample of 224 employees
working in different Indian organizations. Data have been collected through questionnaire
based survey instruments by using spirituality at work scale (Ashmos and Dunchon, 2000),
psychological well-being scale (Ryff, 1989), and stress resiliency scale (Thomas and
Tyinon, 1994). After establishing the reliability of the scales, data have been analyzed by
applying correlation and regression analysis with the help of Statistical Package for the
Social Sciences (SPSS). Results of the study indicate that workplace spirituality and its
dimensions (meaningful work, sense of community, and alignment of personal values with
organizational values) have significant and positive relationship with psychological wellbeing
and its dimensions (autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive
relations with others, purpose in life, and self- acceptance). It has also been found that
dimensions of workplace spirituality have significant relationship with three dimensions of
stress resiliency, namely, deficiency focusing, necessitating, and skill recognition.
Moreover, the study reveals that workplace spirituality can be recognized as a key
predictor of psychological well-being and stress resiliency of employees. Results may be
helpful to organizational leaders, executives, and HR practioners to instill workplace
spirituality in organizational vision, mission, and policies in order to make employees
psychologically well and stress resilient which would ultimately lead to organizational
pemformnance. The study contributes to the existing discourse of workplace spirituality with
some conclusions, implications, limitations, and future research directions.
